Multiple award-winning South African artist, AKA, has received a BET Award nomination in the category Best International Act: Africa, and will attend the 15th annual BET Awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday, 28 June 2015.
AKA is nominated alongside South Africa’s The Soil, Ghana’s Sarokdie and Stonebwoy, Nigeria’s Wizkid and Femi Alade, Kenya’s Sauti Sol and the DRC’s Fally Ipupa.
AKA will arrive in Los Angeles on Friday, 26 June where he will prepare for his BET Hip Hop Around The World Experience performance taking place at the LA Convention Center on Saturday, 27 June. AKA was selected to perform at this build up event to the BET Awards as part of a showcase of hip hop stars making waves outside of the USA.
“I’m looking forward to enjoying LA and the BET’s. It’s a big deal to be nominated amongst Africa’s finest artists at the awards. I’ll be coming straight off the back of my UK tour so it’s going to be nice to have some warm weather for a change. The performance at the BET Hip Hop Around The World Experience is definitely going to be a highlight for me,” says AKA
AKA recently embarked on a UK tour which consisted of PR activities and interviews as well as performances. Some key PR interviews included ones on BBC 1 Xtra, SBTV, Capital FM, Ben TV and most notably a freestyle session on Tim Westwood’s TV Show. Tim Westwood is a world renowned UK radio DJ and has had the likes of Jay Z, Kanye West, Drake and Kendrick Lamar do freestyles for him on his TV show. AKA now forms part of this heavyweight list and is the first South African artist to appear on Tim Westwood’s TV Show.
AKA’s UK tour comes at the back of AKA receiving “A-List” playlisting on BBC 1 Xtra for his single All Eyes On Me, which is still on rotation there as well as radio stations such as Capital FM. A new favourite off AKA’s #LEVELS album is his single Sim Dope which has increased AKA’s popularity in the UK with its radio air play.
