etv’s reality series Mahadi-Lobola season 2 is searching for South Africans who are involved in lobola negotiations to be part of the warm hearted and richly textured show.
The original South African 13-part reality series, is on etv every Sunday at 18:05, is produced by Urban Brew Studios and explores the varied ways in which families undertake lobola negotiations.
Series producer Khulile Nxumalo says, “We’re looking for real stories with heart, which show how rich we are in terms of our tradition. If you’re involved in the first or second negotiations we’d like you to contact us with your story and take this opportunity to showcase your culture. Each story is carefully selected for its dramatic potential and the series, as a whole, reflects the diverse demographics of South Africa, against a backdrop of contemporary needs and concerns.”
Mahadi-Lobola is real and goes where no show has gone before, enabling viewers to be a fly on the wall during the culturally significant practise of lobola negotiations. Rituals that are featured include- letter of intent, visitors waiting outside the home for the negotiations, mouth opener (ivulamlomo), book of minutes and outcome of negotiations, revelation of the bride, ancestral declaration and possible gifts, Umcimbi: two families eat and drink together for the first time ‘as one’.
