Bongani Nchang of the award-winning/multi-platinum selling Malaika and Gospel Classics fame has finally heeded the call and produced a stupendous gospel music album, “Wonders of mercy”.
To some this won’t come as a surprise, especially since he was the musical director of the much loved SABC2 Gospel Classics from the first season to season 4.
Add to that, Malaika fans were treated to at least a single gospel track on each of the group’s four albums, and 16 years later of his professional music career, since his Stouters days, the majestic “Wonders of mercy” has come to bear.
Interestingly, the remarkable album was supposed to be entitled “Gospel according to Bongani”, however during the album’s recording: “…one Sunday as we (with wife Dinolani) were attending church the message of the day was “Wonders of Mercy”.
As the Pastor was preaching we looked at each other and said that’s it. …that’s the name of the album. We then changed the name of the album to the befitting “WONDERS OF MERCY”, because truly God has been merciful to us.
He truly has led by the awe inspiring single ‘Ke tshepile wena”, the star admits that the urge and call has been there for some time now to go the gospel route.
“I finally decided to heed the calling, after I have been avoiding it for some time now. It has finally caught up with me, and I must say that this has brought about such a fulfilment inside of me and, my fans also agree with this welcome and life empowering direction for all.”
Classifying the album, produced by the talented Lebogang Morolo (who has worked with the likes of DR Tumi, Ntokozo Mbambo, Joyous Celebration, Nqubeko Mbatha, Shota), as contemporary Gospel,
Bongani says that he wanted to create a sound that is relevant to both young and matured audiences. I believe that we have achieved that goal, and the response to the material has been proof of that,” he says boldly. “There is nothing as beautiful, life changing and fulfilling like music that is also food for the soul.”
Moreover, Bongani says it was really awesome working closely with Lebo. “We complemented each other in the studio. I gave him space to be the producer of the album by not interfering.”
The first single “Ke tshepile wena” embodies that and more. “We wanted a song that is a crossover and also highlights the mood of rest of the album. That’s how the elevating track was born, and the work speaks for itself. You just have to watch the emotion it evokes to those listening to it, and then you will agree this was just the perfect launch pad for this direction in my music career. What a statement it has become.”
With so much joy abound on the release, the star says that the album recording “was exciting, yet challenging because for the first time in my music career I was fully involved in every aspect of the project. Through my outing as the Music Director on Gospel Classics, in some degree that prepared me for this outing, in that it was a training ground to prepare for the project,” says Bongani.
“Apart from that, as a solo act, I have had to learn to rely more on myself for everything than in a group format. People will pick that up and will be impressed with how far I have come as an artist, and his “WONDERS OF MERCY.”
The music icon has also performed some of the songs to the public and “the response has been so overwhelming not only locally, but also internationally. The goal is to minister the gospel of Jesus Christ in all four corners of the world with power through the Holy Spirit. As a brand I would like to be viewed as someone whom God used mightily through a song,” he enthuses.
