CBeebies wins big at the BAFTA Children’s Awards 2016

The BBC’s preschool channel has been awarded the top accolade at the 2016 BAFTA Children’s Awards in London. CBeebies was crowned Channel of the Year and was praised for its effective blending of educational, entertaining and safe programming for young children. CBeebies won the much coveted award ahead of competitor channels including Cartoon Network.

CBeebies’ global hit Hey Duggee was voted Best Pre-School Animation on the night. Hey Duggee, an original commission for BBC Worldwide, was one of CBeebies’ top ten programmes in South Africa in 2015. Hey Duggee inspires children to have fun, be energetic and get exploring.  From series one, the programme became an instant hit and is now shown in over 150 territories worldwide.

Another big success for the channel was that three of the four finalist programmes for Best Pre-School Animation award were all BBC Worldwide commissioned – Hey Duggee, Sarah & Duck and Go Jetters.

Kully Kaur-Bains, Head of Programming South Africa, BBC Worldwide commented, “we are thrilled that both CBeebies channel and Hey Duggee have been recognised in such a fantastic way in the UK. The CBeebies channel offers a vast collection of programmes that strive to engage, entertain and educate our younger audiences globally. We are always looking for new and exciting programmes to bring to the channel to keep its success going from strength to strength.”

In addition to the two award wins, BBC Worldwide’s co-commission with the BBC Natural History Unit, Andy’s Prehistoric Adventure, was also nominated in the Preschool Live-Action category. This shows the calibre and quality of content that BBC Worldwide works towards with all of its children’s related content and formats.

The CBeebies channel recently launched on the Zuku TV platform on channel 602 and is now available as a 24 hour channel in East Africa as well as sitting on the MultiChoice platform on DStv channel 306 in sub-Saharan Africa.
