The fired idols judge, Gareth Cliff, has instituted a civil claim against his ex-employers, M-Net.
He is suing R5 million for defamation and R20 million for contractual damages.
Gareth was fired following his remarks about racial comments made by the controversial Penny Sparrow. Penny had said black people were monkeys, and Gareth posted on social media that Penny was enjoying her right to freedom of expression.
It was that status that did not dwell well with his employers, and he was shown the door as a result although Gareth has made it clear that he was not in any way supporting Penny’s racial slur.
The Juice had a privilege of seeing the court papers filed by Gareth’s legal team, which include EFF chairperson, Adv Dali Mpofu SC.
It was reported that Gareth was earning R356, 160 just to sit in 10 sessions for the popular reality singing contest. This indicates that Gareth was taking home R35 000 per show.
