In the year during which all previous voting records were smashed week after week, 24-year-old Karabo Mogane from Mbombela emerged as the winner of Idols SA Season 11 by raking in 54.97% of the votes in the final week of the competition. Throughout the season, however, a neck-on-neck race played out between Karabo and runner-up, 23-year-old Mmatema Moremi from Limpopo, who took the lead after the Top 10, Top 8, Top 5 and Top 4 Spectaculars – at some occasions with less than a percentage, and with Rhema Varrie often hot on their heels!
At the same time, the rest of the contestants fiercely battled it out to stay in the game, shifting ranking order as the show progressed (see table below, as verified by auditing company Deloitte & Touche).
Season 11 of Idols SA generated over 78 million votes as opposed to Season 10’s previous record of 24.3 million votes. In addition, the show was a massive digital success story with in excess of 16 million page views of the official website, 8 million social media likes, comments and shares, 7.7 million video views, 1.6 million social media followers and 320 000 WeChat followers.
“The incredibly high quality of talent, their show-stopping performances and the fantastic production values of the series, clearly resonated with our audiences,” says M-Net CEO Yolisa Phahle. “Even the singers who didn’t make it to the final received unprecedented votes and we believe that Idols has been an amazing platform for all of them to start a great career in the music industry.”
This year, the Idols winner’s album will be available much sooner than before. Universal Music South Africa will have it on the shelves from Friday 11 December 2015.
Plans for the next season of Idols SA are already on their way with auditions kicking off on Saturday, 30 January at the Durban Playhouse. The following Saturday (6 February) the auditions will take place at the State Theatre in Pretoria; then on Sunday 28 February it’s all happening at Carnival City Casino and Entertainment World on the East Rand; and on Saturday, 5 March wannabe singing stars can enter the competition at the GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World in Cape Town.
The judging panel for Idols SA Season 12 has not been confirmed yet.
