Leleti Khumalo has landed a leading role in the upcoming apartheid-era Romeo and Juliet film called Free State!
The 46-year-old legendary actress in the film will play the role of a domestic worker, who raises the young woman as her own, Jeanette, after she loses her mother.
The film, written and directed by Sallas de Jager, is about an Afrikaans woman who falls in love with an Indian man in the 1970s – but their love is illegal according to the apartheid Immorality Act.
Also stars in the new movie are Andrew Govender, Deon Lotz, Keith Gengadoo, Suraya-Rose Santos, Mangesh Desai, Nicola Breytenbach and Rolanda Marais.
