More than 2,000 show up for Durban ‘Idols SA’ Auditions

Idols SA” season 12 auditions kicked off in high gear last Saturday (January 30) at Playhouse in Durban. The Idols SA 2016 auditions was attended by more than 2000 people from Gauteng and surroundings.

Bongo drummer Mxolisi Manqele (24) of New Castle and Phumzile Washusha (21) from Ntuzuma didn’t want to take a chance of missing out on seeing the judges and camped outside the venue all night. “I didn’t even have a jersey, so those of us who were outside huddled to keep warm. But now the cold has affected my voice,” said a hoarse Washusha, who works as a cleaner.

Repeated rejection did not deter Nokwazi Maphumulo (27) and Ntando Maphumulo (22) who were coming back for the 5th time each. They giggled nervously with their friend Michelle Mzimela (20), who was entering for the third time. The trio had all been rejected on the first round, but were optimistic about their chances in Season 12.

With queues snaking all the way around the Playhouse, this proved to be the best turn out yet. Idols SA presenter and co-executive producer Proverb was impressed with the turn out.

“Durban has delivered every single season I’ve been part of, both from a turn out point of view but most especially from a talent point of view. And this year is no different. The Zulu Kingdom has come to the party and produced once again,” he gushed.

Proverb added that the province that produced Idols SA winners Khaya Mthethwa and Vincent Bones had set the tone for the rest of the audition tour.

“As our first stop for the Season 12 search, the bar has certainly been set and KZN is to be applauded for always coming to the party, literally and figuratively,” said Proverb.

Only time will tell if “the warmest place in South Africa” will unearth the next Idol!

The search moves to Pretoria’s State Theatre on 6 February 2016, then Carnival City in Joburg on 28 February 2016, and finishes off at Cape Town’s Grand West Entertainment World on 5 March 2016.

Entry is free and open to all South African citizens who are between 16 and 30 years old on the date of their first audition.

Bring your ID document to the audition, and minors must have written consent signed by a parent or guardian.
