Noeleen Maholwana-Sangqu turns 49

Happy birthday Noleen

Noeleen Maholwana-Sangqu is a South African Television Presenter on 3 Talk.

Noeleen Maholwana-Sangqu was born today in 1967 and raised in Umtata.

Noeleen is a journalist by training and spent a number of years in news handling for Radio Transkei and Radio 702. She also worked in News for television.

Her six years at Radio Transkei gave Noeleen the opportunity to develop an in-depth knowledge of journalism as well as Public Relations, both in theory and in its application.

In pursuit of better prospects, Noeleen moved to Johannesburg in 1994 to join Radio 702 as a junior reporter before landing a co-hosting job. She worked her way up and in the space of four years became the station’s news editor. Noeleen registered for a Management Advancement Programme (MAP) with Wits Business School and duly completed the programme in 1999.

From 2001, she was on the Primedia Board and hosted her own daily show before leaving the company at the end of 2002. In October 2002 Noeleen was awarded the Population Institute’s Global Award for Radio Programme excellence. The award ceremony took place in Havana, Cuba in December 2002.

She joined the SABC in 2003, hosting a TV show, 3 Talk, which draws an average of 450 000 viewers a day and on some days they receive up to 25 000 calls per episode. [Cited: City Press, 5 February 2005, Page 5] It has enormous appeal to a broad cross section of people; her demographic is hard to pin down because it encompasses all races, ages, religions and genders.

“It’s so broad that if a marketer would try to narrow 3Talk down, it would be impossible. Petrol pump attendants tell me they watch 3Talk and doctors tell me they watch. I’m always trying to find the reason for the broad appeal. It’s pleasantly surprising.”

When asked to account for the broad appeal of 3 Talk, Noeleen says “I think people want information and better lives for themselves. I don’t bring that, but that information does come from my guests who are the drivers of 3Talk.”

In 2004 and 2005 Noeleen won the Crystal Award for Best Talk Show Host for 3Talk.

Noeleen Maholwana married Andile Sangqu in 1993 and they have three children: Thando, and twins Khanya and Siyanda, who has cerebral palsy. Noeleen strongly believes that in order for women to claim their rightful positions at the top of the corporate ladder, they have to unlock their power. Noeleen loves spending time with her family, cooking and enjoying the finer things in life. Sadly, at the end of October 2010, the couple decided to split and Sangqu had to move out of their house, but could not do so due his commitment to their children. The popular 3 Talk host, whose TV show educates and entertains up to half a million viewers a day, is living proof that attending top private schools and growing up in big city centers are not a prerequisite for success.
