The Playhouse Company sets to hold auditions in KZN

KZN’s premier theatre organization, The Playhouse Company is holding auditions for its production called Sugar Daddies, which will be presented on the Company’s mobile stage at high schools throughout KwaZulu-Natal from 18 July to 12 August 2016.

The production is being re-staged after a very successful run in 2014 when it played to over 20 000 learners.

Sugar Daddies focuse on the current and prevalent practice of older, often married, men with financial means having very young girlfriends.

These young girls are often seeking a way to achieve a better lifestyle without realising the consequences and implications of their actions. The production highlights the irresponsible behaviour of these ‘sugar daddies’ or ‘blessers’, as they are now often called, and seeks to help young women to avoid falling victim to these predators.

Three female actresses are required to audition for the production for the following characters:

  1. Thandeka (16 years old). Thandeka is a teenager who has just moved to the community to live with her grandmother after her mother has passed away.

She befriends Lesiwe at school and in a short space of time begins a relationship with a string of “sugar daddies” around the community.

She has very little financial support, and relies on men to pay her school fees, cell phone bills, and so forth. She has grown up without a father figure.

She contracts HIV from her affair with Simpiwe, but does not know her status when she sleeps with other men.

  1. Lesiwe Cele (16 years old).

Teenaged Lesiwe is heavily influenced by her rebellious school friend Thandeka. Encouraged by Thandeka, she enters into a brief relationship with a “sugar daddy” named Simpiwe.

  1. Nosipho Cele (38 years old).

Nosipho is the mother of Lesiwe, and a compassionate and concerned mother and wife.

Anyone interested in auditioning should please note the following:
Only females between the age of 20 and 35 may audition; all potential candidates need to be experienced in the genre of drama, and preference will be given to performers with professional experience; candidates need to prepare a monologue of one to two minutes in length; candidates are asked to please bring in a headshot photograph and their CV to the audition; candidates need to be able to speak good English and isiZulu and candidates need to be available for rehearsals from 4 to 15 July, and then for the tour of the production from 18 July to 12 August 2016.

Auditions will take place at The Playhouse in Rehearsal Room A1 on Tuesday 21 June from 09h00.

To book for an audition, please contact Khulekani Kunene on 031 369 9440 between 09h00 and 16h00, Monday to Friday. The closing dates for audition bookings is 15 June.

Schools (high schools only) interested in booking a performance of the production are asked to call Khulekani Kunene on 031 369 9440.
