Famous faces from the SA comedy and entertainment scene have been queuing up to wish good luck to Trevor Noah as he makes his debut as host of Comedy Central’s ground-breaking spoof news programme The Daily Show with Trevor Noah (DStv channel 122, 21:00, Tuesday 29 September 2015).
Among the celebrities sending their best wishes to Trevor on social media have been: comedians Riaad Moosa, David Kau and Goliath & Goliath; DJs Euphonik, Fresh, and Zinhle; media personality Penny Lebyane, lead singer of Prime Circle, Ross Learmonth, DJ Vigilante and model Maps Maponyane, songbird Mariechan Luiters, radio personality Angela Ludek, news anchor Leanne Manas, legend Joe Mafela, actor Rapulana Seiphemo, actress Manaka Ranaka, musician George Avakian, choreographer Somizi, TV personality Lunga Tshabalala, soapie stars Kabelo, Nkuli, Lebo Mtunzi and JT Medupi from “Generations”, and “Isidingo’s” Tema Sebopedi.
Noah’s debut has been a global news phenomenon, covered in outlets from The New York Times to The Guardian (UK), The Sunday Times (South Africa), The Today Show, Newsweek and beyond. In the US, Noah’s arrival at The Daily Show has made huge waves, so much so that Comedy Central’s parent company Viacom decided to simulcast the show on sister channels MTV and VH1, while in Africa, pay-TV platform DStv opened Comedy Central to Compact viewers for the whole first week of broadcast.
Noah, 31, made his hosting debut last night on The Daily Show in the USA, ahead of the South African premiere on Comedy Central Africa (DStv channel 122) at 21:00 on Tuesday 29 September.
Noah’s first week’s guests include superstar comic (Kevin Hart, “Real Husbands of Hollywood”), a presidential candidate (Chris Christie, Governor of New Jersey), musician (Ryan Adams), and entrepreneur (Whitney Wolfe, founder and CEO of Bumble).
Among the lucky South Africans who watched Trevor make his debut live in the studio were H.E. Ms Maite Nkoana Mashabane, Minister of International Relations of the Republic of South Africa, H.E. Ambassador Mninwa Mahlangu, South Africa’s Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Mrs Mathula Nkosi, Consul General of the Republic of South Africa in New York, accompanied by competition winner Lalenthra Naidoo, who beat more than 20,000 applicants to win an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the debut taping of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.
