South African Music Awards 2016: What time are the SAMAs?


It’s South Africa music’s biggest night once again: The 22th edition of South African Music Awards (SAMAs) 2016 will take place tonight, Saturday (June 04), to bestow numerous gilded gramophones on the music industry’s ‘best of the best’.


What time does the show start? What Channel?

As usual, the SAMAs ceremony will have splashy performances taking place and the winners in the major, more general categories are revealed.

This year’s main event will be held at Durban ICC in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal 08:00 to 10:30 p.m.  It will be broadcasted live on SABC1.

Who is hosting?

Television personalities Bonang MathebaPearl Modiadie and Lunga Shabalala.

Television personality Somizi Mhlongo and Generations star-turned-5FM radio host Thando Thabethe will host the#SAMA22 Red Carpet.

Joining them from the #SAMA22 Amstel Green Room will be effervescent film and TV personality Khanyi Mbau and dynamic SABC TV and Metro FM radio host Phat Joe.

The pair will be conducting exclusive backstage interviews with all the winners as they step off stage, celebrating Mzansi’s music innovators and trailblazers.

Who’s performing?

Grammy Award winning and 3 time SAMA 21 winning flautist Wouter Kellerman alongside rappers Kid X and Da L.E.S.

Audiences should also get ready to for a genre-bending, multi-sensory mash-up that includes artists Petite Noir, The Muffinz and Desmond & the Tutus

Local Durban favourite DJ Bongz will add to the mix with a high-energy performance, while hip-hop leading lights Emtee and Kwesta will team up to deliver a slice of sheer entertainment dynamite!

The nominees

Emtee best known for his hit album ‘Avery’ leads the pack with 5 nominations, multi-awards singer Nathi trails him with four nominations, and Riky Rick andb Black Coffee are also up for four.
