Craig Massiv and Troydon Murison formed a friendship and musical connection in their coming-of-age years as deep house DJs in the unique underground club scene of post-Apartheid Johannesburg in South Africa.
These early experiences – which saw them behind the decks of dance floors of both exclusive club parties and gritty township taverns – helped form a sonic sensibility that has been integral to their successes as individual producers.
Collaborations with names like Switch, John Hill and Diplo on projects from Major Lazer, Santogold, MIA, Christina Aguilera, Alex Claire, Mike Snow and the Beastie Boys indicates the level to which they have risen to in their respective careers.
Finally, thanks more to technology than geography – Massiv (still Johannesburg based) and Murison (now living in Los Angeles) have collaborated on a project that best represents this shared history and global future: the result is loskop.
Their debut single These Sparks, which features Maiya Sykes truly reflects this duality. Sykes’ superb melodic vocal over a hard drum n bass groove – the edge and energy of L.A. connecting seamlessly with the possibility and uncertainty of contemporary Johannesburg.
Sykes’ featured artist spot also attests to the global and connected nature of the project – she was a standout competitor on The Voice season 7 and toured with Macy Gray for six years – now featuring on a single from two SA born dance music aficionados.
