The pop star, who scooped her fifth Grammy in February this year for the song “Say Something”, will perform at the glittering event along with fellow US singer Jason Derulo and a host of local artists including AKA, The Soil and ChianoSky.
A judge on the top-rated US reality singing show, The Voice, Aguilera has sold more than 50 million albums since breaking into the entertainment industry as a member of the Disney channel’s The Mickey Mouse Club (where she performed alongside fellow “graduates” Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake).
The SATY 2015 Awards take place this year at the Ticketpro Dome (formerly known as the Coca-Cola Dome) in Northgate on October 17. Hosted by TV news channel ANN7 the Awards both celebrate and honour prominent and unheralded South Africans excelling in various fields.
These range from business, sport, entertainment, civil society, entrepreneurship and politics as well as ordinary South Africans making a difference in the country. The main category is the South African of the Year Award, which is currently held by the Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela.
Last year the inaugural awards ceremony was hosted by Bonang and the international headline act was former member of the Pussycat Dolls and pop star Nicole Scherzinger.
Editor-in-Chief for ANN7 and SATY 2015 organiser, Moegsien Williams, says securing Aguilera was indeed a coup.
“While we are celebrating all things South African, our intention is, at the same time, to market the country and showcase the wide array of talented, innovative, industrious, high-achieving and successful people in our land and within all spheres. This is why, strategically, we secure major international acts each year.”
He says Aguilera is one of the world’s leading recording artists as well as a role model given her numerous charitable endeavours. “The South African of the Year Awards is a prestigious event featuring and attended by the Who’s Who of South Africa. We are therefore proud to have an artist as talented and socially responsible as Christina Aguilera,” says Williams.
Aguilera, 34, rose to prominence when her debut single, “Genie In A Bottle”, became a worldwide hit in 1999. Since then she has performed around the globe and churned out hits such as “What A Girl Wants”, “Dirrty”, “Ain’t No Other Man” and “Beautiful”, among others. She has also won a slew of prestigious awards and has been recognised for her humanitarian endeavours.
In the run up to SATY 2015, ANN7 is screening the show, “I am South African”, which airs Monday to Saturday at 6pm. With 83 episodes commissioned, it celebrates South Africa’s leading artists, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, politicians and athletes. It is hosted by model, TV presenter and actor, Masego “Maps” Maponyane, and can be seen on ANN7.
